DIY Cat Toy from a Cardboard Box

Basic Materials: A sturdy cardboard box, preferably one from an appliance package or similar—something thick and rigid that will last a long time.
Additional Materials: A craft knife, plastic bottle caps, cotton thread, a pom-pom, a large plastic water bottle, 502 glue, packing tape, and a thick needle or awl.

1. Reinforce the bottom with packing tape.
2. Determine the entrance and exit points on opposite sides of the box. This allows for ventilation and makes the cat feel more secure.
3. On the front of the box, mark the spacing and cut out several holes. You can use round objects like paper cups as templates. On the side closest to the back, cut out a square opening slightly smaller than the water bottle but large enough for the cat’s head to fit through.
4. Draw guide lines directly above each hole to mark the positions for the bottle caps on the top. Pre-cut corresponding holes in the top panel. Thread a needle with cotton string, attach the bottle caps or balls, adjust the length, and tie a knot to secure them.
5. Cut open the bottom of the plastic bottle and trim it slightly to reduce the height. Place it over the top opening you’ve prepared, draw a guide line, and use a utility knife to cut along the line. Insert the bottle into the slit and secure it with 502 glue or a hot glue gun. Do the same for the bottom to prevent the kitten from getting cut.
6. To create small holes in the paper cup for freeze-dried food, cut a piece of cardboard from a new paper cup to serve as a barrier. Freeze-dry the food, then string the small toys together with a rubber band. Tie the rubber band securely under the cardboard piece. Apply glue to the rim of the paper cup and attach it to the inside of the plastic bottle. Thread the rubber band through the top of the bottle, punch a small hole in the bottle cap, thread the rubber band through it, and tie a knot to secure it. To add freeze-dried food, simply open the bottle cap and pour it in.
