Litter training starts with familiar scents, timed placement after meals, regular sessions, and guiding cats to recognize the litter box using their own waste.
When do kittens learn to use the litter box?
Prerequisites: [The kitten can urinate on its own] How can you tell? The kitten’s sleeping area stays dry; it no longer rubs urine onto the litter mat; it doesn’t urinate in its sleeping area even after three or four hours without going; or it clearly chooses to urinate on the litter mat rather than rubbing it. When taken out, it will selectively find a spot to squat and urinate, producing a large puddle rather than leaving a trail of drips.
How to Train Your Cat to Use the Litter Box?
1.Familiarize with the scent
If possible, bring home the original litter box with your cat's scent.
If the cat hasn't used a litter box before, place it in the box after bringing it home to get acquainted with the litter scent.
2. Post-meal routine
About 20 minutes after feeding, place the kitten in the litter box.If it jumps out, gently return it and wait for elimination. If no elimination occurs, wait one hour before repeating the process.
3. Scheduled Sessions
Place the cat in the litter box every 2 hours to encourage elimination.
4. Waste Management
If the cat eliminates elsewhere, transfer the waste to the litter box.
Allow the cat to sniff it, then teach it to cover the waste with its front paws.
