One of the questions we occasionally get from customers is:
"I think a raccoon peed on my cat house. The canvas smells terrible. What should I do?"
Unfortunately, if you live in an area with raccoons, stray cats, or other wildlife, this can happen from time to time.
The good news is that the smell can usually be removed without replacing the cat house.
Don't Start with Bleach
Many people immediately reach for bleach when they encounter a strong urine odor.
We don't recommend it.
Bleach can leave behind a strong chemical smell, may damage certain materials over time, and often doesn't completely eliminate animal urine odors.
The smell may disappear for a few days and then return once moisture or humidity increases.
What We Recommend Instead
For our outdoor cat houses, we've found that enzyme-based odor eliminators work much better.
These products don't simply cover up odors. Instead, they break down the organic compounds that cause the smell in the first place.
If the odor is coming from urine left by a raccoon, stray cat, or another animal, an enzyme cleaner is usually the most effective solution.
How to Clean the Cat House
The process is simple:
- Spray the affected area thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner.
- Let it sit according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Rinse the exterior with a garden hose.
- Allow the cat house to dry completely in direct sunlight.
In most cases, one treatment is enough. For stronger odors, a second application may help.
A Tip from Experience
One thing we've noticed is that customers sometimes assume the odor is coming from inside the shelter when it's actually on the exterior fabric.
Before taking the house apart, inspect the outside carefully.
Wild animals often mark the outside walls rather than entering the shelter itself.
Final Thoughts
A wildlife visitor doesn't mean your cat house is ruined.
With a quality enzyme cleaner, a thorough rinse, and plenty of sunlight, most odors can be removed successfully.
That's the same cleaning method we typically recommend when customers contact us about wildlife-related odors.
