When you encounter that stray cat at the alley entrance, always keeping a safe distance, its wary gaze and subtle posture yearning for closeness reveal its conflicting emotions—both fear and anticipation toward humans. Rebuilding trust with such strays requires patience akin to untangling knotted silk threads. Here is a proven three-stage progressive approach.
The initial ice-breaking phase typically takes one to two weeks, focusing on establishing security. Feed from over ten feet away and avoid direct eye contact—for cats, staring signifies threat. Speak softly at the same time each day, making your voice a stable element in its life. Consider placing a worn piece of your clothing near the feeding spot; familiar scents are the best bridges to trust.

Once the cat anticipates your arrival, transition to non-contact interaction. Sit nearby and use a feather toy or treat ball to encourage it to approach voluntarily. If it relaxes in front of you, grooming itself or rolling over, this signals significant progress. At this stage, try a slow blink—the feline equivalent of a smile.
Breakthroughs typically occur between weeks four and eight. When the cat gently rubs its head against your hand or purrs near your feet, it indicates readiness for deeper bonding. Introduce an airline-approved carrier as a safe space, stocked with food, water, and soft padding. Allow free access to prepare for potential indoor living.

Caution: Overfeeding out of kindness can backfire. Excess food not only disrupts the ecosystem but may also provoke fights among cats and delay the socialization process. The ideal feeding approach is to provide fixed portions at scheduled times, preferably in the morning and evening, removing any uneaten food after twenty minutes. If basic trust remains unestablished after six months, TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) may be the more humane option. Every cat has the right to determine its own life. Sometimes, respecting their boundaries is the deepest form of kindness.
