Where Do Feral Cats Hide When It’s Cold?

In cold weather, feral cats hide in tight, warm spaces like porches, bushes, and car engines—some are dangerous. Safe feeding and awareness help protect them.

When temperatures drop, feral cats seek out any place that offers shelter from the wind and retains heat. However, some of these spots can be extremely dangerous. As someone who cares about cats, knowing where they hide will help you keep them safe and provide them with better options during the winter.

Common Hiding Spots in Nature and the City
Stray cats are experts at finding tight spaces. They prefer areas that fit their bodies perfectly. Small spaces retain a cat’s body heat better than large ones. You can often find cats in these areas:
Under porches and decks: These spots are dry and sheltered from snow.

Dense shrubbery: Evergreens and thick bushes provide wind protection.
Abandoned buildings: Old sheds or garages are ideal because they stay dry.
Crawl spaces: Cats often find small openings in house walls and squeeze under the floorboards.
Car engines: Be sure to walk around your car and check it before getting in! When the weather gets cold, many cats like to hide under cars to stay warm. The hood, areas near the wheels, and the undercarriage are common spots where they seek shelter. Gently tap the car body or honk the horn to give them time to escape.

Feeding Tips: Don’t feed milk! It causes diarrhea! Offer lukewarm water (which prevents freezing for a short time) or softened dry food. Feed at the same time and place every day, and avoid overfeeding to prevent spoilage.
