Kittens often bite and scratch during play or teething. Redirecting their energy to toys and avoiding hand play helps prevent bad habits as they grow.
Kittens are especially prone to biting and scratching during their early stages! So if your little kitten has been doing this lately, you must take action right away—otherwise, it will become a habit as they grow up, which will be a real problem.
The main reason kittens bite is that they didn’t undergo proper socialization with their mother when they were young. If you approach them while they’re playing, they’re likely to mistake you for prey!
① Preventing biting: Don’t pet it when it’s playing wildly to avoid unnecessary injuries. Cats sleep a lot—especially kittens, who sleep nearly 20 hours a day. There’s really no need to play with it or pet it when it’s running around excitedly. When it’s lying down, sleeping, or eating, isn’t that the perfect time to pet it? Without a “prey” target, it’ll just be calm. But the moment you reach out, it’ll get even more excited.
② If it starts treating you like prey: Grab a cat teaser or a small toy and toss it to distract them. This teaches them that the target of their hunt is the toy, not you. Over time, they’ll stop seeing you as a playmate to chase.
③ Teething phase—they’re especially prone to biting: Do not play with them using your hands!! !! If you don’t want to end up with your hands and feet being treated like a rabbit kicking around, don’t do this—otherwise, your hands and feet will become its targets for chasing. During this period, make sure to provide chew toys and treats promptly.
④ If it bites you: Yell out in pain or scream “Ouch!” to make it let go immediately, preventing an injury.
Then make eye contact with it for about 30 seconds to show your anger, and put it in its cage for 20–30 minutes so it knows biting will result in punishment! Under no circumstances should you hit or scold it at this point! Cats have no concept of punishment, and this could provoke a counterattack. Over time, it may become afraid of you, avoid you, and stop being affectionate.
