Black-and-white cats aren’t bad-tempered—they’re energetic, intelligent, independent, and full of personality.
People often say that “black-and-white cats have bad tempers,” but only those who have actually owned one know that the idea of the Holstein cat having a “bad temper” is actually a huge misconception. They aren’t really bad—they just have a lot of personality.
Black-and-white cats are notorious for their boundless energy, earning them the nickname “the Huskies of the cat world.” They’re so full of energy every day that it’s as if they’re powered by a perpetual motion machine—they sleep sprawled out during the day, but as soon as 2 a.m. rolls around, they start putting on a parkour show in the living room. If this boundless energy has nowhere to go, it can certainly make you question your sanity—but they aren’t being destructive; they’re simply looking for an outlet for their excess energy.
What gives cat owners even more headaches is that black-and-white cats are highly intelligent but have almost zero obedience. When you call its name, it can hear you and understands what you’re saying, but it chooses to ignore you. This isn’t rudeness; it’s simply that it has its own way of interpreting “human commands.” If there’s something it doesn’t want to do, repeating yourself a few times certainly won’t make it budge. Interestingly, black-and-white cats have such good memories that they can be a bit “vindictive.” If you’ve ever treated it roughly—for example, by forcing it into a hug, yelling at it, or hurting it while trimming its nails—it might take note of it and find an opportunity to get even—such as jumping onto your bed and stepping on your face while you’re sleeping, or deliberately knocking things off the table. It hasn’t forgotten; it’s just waiting for you to let your guard down.
But to say black-and-white cats have a bad temper is like saying a person is “too headstrong to get along with”—it doesn’t sound quite fair. Physically, black-and-white cats are among the hardiest and easiest to care for; they aren’t picky eaters and rarely get sick. When they settle down, they’ll rub against your hand or curl up on your lap, purring contentedly—and that contrast is incredibly soothing. Plus, black-and-white cats have a natural flair for entertainment. They never play by the rules, are incredibly bold, and often pull off moves that catch you off guard—like burrowing into a pile of freshly laundered clothes, breathing on a mirror for three seconds, or suddenly staring blankly into space. With a black-and-white cat, your life will never be boring.
So when people say black-and-white cats have a “bad temper,” what they’re really describing is a combination of “boundless energy + high intelligence + a mind of their own.” It’s not that they have a bad temper; they’re just not very keen on being obedient cats. If you can accept their personality and are willing to spend time helping them burn off their energy, you’ll discover that this isn’t just a cat—it’s more like a life companion who might cause you some trouble but will never let you get bored.
